The Representation of Black Fathers in Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead and Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man: Miles Morales
摘要
This chapter evaluates positive depictions of Black fathers in the two highly praised eponymous video games from 2019 and 2020, respectively. In these games, Black fathers play significant roles in the narrative and are shown to be devoted, engaged, and crucial to the story. Via these representations of fathers, the games, to some extent, challenge prevailing stereotypes of Black fathers as irresponsible or absent, while they also recognize the complexity of racial identity and celebrate fathers’ commitment and involvement. Such portrayals are essential for dismantling harmful stereotypes and making Black fathers’ presence in gaming stories more normalized. Black fathers in video games not only challenge negative stereotypes but also have the potential to uplift and empower all players. These representations can break down barriers and encourage inclusivity, fostering empathy and understanding among gamers.
