This chapter surveys teenage birth mothers who give their children up for adoption, and challenges the societal stigma and moral judgments often placed upon these young women. Reviewing the young adult novels The How and the Why by Hand (2019) and Far from the Tree by Benway (2017), Lawler demonstrates how both novels depict the emotional struggles these mothers face, emphasizing their lack of agency and the conflicting pressures from both family and society. Lawler argues that these fictional representations can foster greater empathy and understanding for real-life teenage birth mothers, who often experience shame, trauma, and a lack of support due to their age and marital status. She advocates for a shift in societal attitudes to recognize the validity of all forms of motherhood and to support teenage mothers in making empowered choices about their lives and their children.
