This chapter explores how the novel With Teeth (2021) and the memoir Choosing Family (2023) challenge and change heteronormative motherhood within American contexts by undoing four of these dictates: normalization, idealization, privatization, and biologicalization. The chapter considers how the novel and memoir queer motherhood to counter these dictates of normative motherhood by way of two discursive strategies of misrepresentation and re-representation. Overall, O’Reilly suggests that as Choosing Family may be read as a blueprint for how to create queer family and motherhood, With Teeth should be read as a cautionary tale on how not to do it. O’Reilly contends the authors deliver innovative strategies for the writing and reading of other queer narratives and provide new models for how queer love may be lived and theorized.
