This chapter problematises the implications of transgender activist Gauri Sawant’s ‘performing’ of mothering in contemporary visual narratives, and the employment of specific/sanctioned aspects of mothering in popular representations of her life in India today. The chapter argues that such representations have contributed to a facile notion of ‘acceptance’ towards the transgender activist in recent public discourse, catapulting her into fame in recent years. While Sawant has been an important activist and social worker for over two decades, advocating multiple causes related to the transgender community, Tewari and Suukyi posit that it is her recent presence on visual platforms that have rendered her ‘visible’ to the country at large. The chapter investigates Sawant’s identity as a ‘mother’ to her adopted daughter in order to examine how a preoccupation with her status as a mother, interpreted within a cisgender mothering framework, has resulted in social ‘acceptability’ and approval towards her transgender identity.
