Irrigation water is a crucial resource in sustainable agriculture development, directly affecting crop growth, soil health, and overall agricultural productivity. The contents and quality of irrigation water need to be carefully managed to ensure the long-term sustainability of agricultural practices. The soluble components consisting of anions such as sulphate, chloride, bicarbonate, carbonate, and nitrate, and cations like calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium determine the quality of water. Poor quality of irrigation water damages the plant in several aspects, viz., water extraction from soil, showing toxicity on crops, nutrient uptake mechanism, and inhibiting the production of proteins, cell division, and cell expansion. However, using poor-quality water of higher sodium content deflocculates the soil, which indirectly hampers crop root penetration. Salinity, boron, chloride hazard, and carbonates and bicarbonates concentrations are the indicators to standardize the quality of irrigation water. Anthropogenic managements like cropping (tolerant varieties sowing), fertilizer, irrigation management, and mulching help to minimize the effect and impurities present in poor-quality irrigation water. Good water used for irrigation purposes is a non-renewable resource, mostly depleted by bad agricultural practices (BAP). Therefore, it is advisable to use sustainable practices for conserving natural resources and go for conjunctive use of water (mixing of good plus bad water) for irrigation purposes.
