A.T.E.N.A. Teaching with 3D Models Optimal Conditions to Support Memory Acquisition and Retrieval

The A.T.E.N.A. project (Augmented Tools for Enhancement of Neural Activation), launched in January 2023, aims to investigate the impact of Augmented Reality (AR) on critical variables in the educational process, focusing on a sample of university and primary school students. The integration of AR in didactic has been shown to enhance learning processes by positively influencing memory, emotional intelligence, and motivation, creating a ripple effect on students’ overall performance. A.T.E.N.A. is grounded in the principles of constructivism and Embodied Cognition, with particular emphasis on using smartphones as educational tools to establish a stronger cultural anchoring for digital-native students. Through Embodied Cognition, the manipulation of 3D models in AR stimulates brain activation in the motor cortex, enhancing synaptic connections and promoting multisensory learning. This part of the research compared the impact of AR on two different educational topics: neural correlates (using 3D models of brain areas) and prehistory (with 3D models of dinosaurs and fossils). The research hypothesis affirms that AR has a greater impact on learning when interactive gestures on the model are directed towards acquiring information that is not easily accessible through two-dimensional images. Results indicate that manipulating brain models in AR offers a deeper understanding of visuo-spatial relationships between brain areas and their activation during complex cognitive processes. Conversely, the prehistoric models primarily increase engagement and motivation, without adding new information compared to traditional teaching methods.
