In the design practices of robots embedded in everyday life, the uncanny valley effect is not only a technical challenge but also a critical issue in user experience design. Current strategies to address this phenomenon primarily fall into two categories: avoidance and transcendence. Avoidance strategies aim to reduce discomfort by designing robots with cute and submissive appearances but often reinforce anthropocentrism. Transcendence strategies, on the other hand, rely entirely on technological advancements while neglecting the emotional and ethical complexities inherent in user experience. This paper analyzes the impact of the uncanny valley effect on user experience through two dimensions: “uncanny” and “ambiguity.” The uncanny represents an external and definitive attribute, while ambiguity is an internal and indeterminate quality, which opens up an interpretive space for design. Through case studies, this paper explores the application of ambiguity strategies across three dimensions: information, relational, and contextual. Information ambiguity mitigates the practical attributes of robots’ appearance and functionality, provoking users to reflect on their essence. Relational ambiguity disrupts the traditional hierarchical roles between humans and robots, encouraging users to construct new relational dynamics through interaction. Contextual ambiguity subtly breaks established scenarios, indirectly prompting users to reconsider the domestication of technology. These design strategies grounded in ambiguity offer a new perspective on user experience in human-robot interaction, enhancing openness and participation while stimulating deeper reflections on the relationship between technology and everyday life. They provide potential pathways for constructing more ethically aware user experiences in the future.
