Scientific concepts, both novel and well established, have increased in number to the point where the number of options available for drug development can seem overwhelming. This short chapter aims to organise the different elements of R&D into discrete but interrelated systems, each of which has clearly defined targets for the future development of therapeutics. These elements are genetics, cell biology, the microbiome, immunology and the nervous system.
