Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining territory in many areas of the healthcare system and the endoscopy scene is no exception. In both small bowel and colon capsule endoscopy, several tasks are targets for the development of AI algorithms meant for supporting clinicians in capsule reading, reporting and patient management. Areas of interest, to name a few, are detection of polyps, cancers and anomalies such as vascular lesions and inflammation, bowel cleansing quality evaluation and localisation of landmarks and pathology. With the rapid development through recent years, concerns about the ethical and legal implications surface. Questions regarding explainability, responsibility and security in relation to AI in healthcare are part of an important and ongoing discussion that will shape the future landscape of AI in capsule endoscopy.
