A very rarefied atmosphere is considered in which all particles fly freely without collisions. The speed of all particles decreases in the vertical direction due to gravity. Because the temperature depends on the speed of the particles, one could assume that the temperature also decreases with altitude. However, if there is an equilibrium distribution on the ground, the temperature remains constant and is independent of altitude. This fact is clearly explained.
