This paper explores the sustainability potential of low-cost 3D printing in Vietnam by evaluating the impact of a PET recycler called Polyformer, which converts plastic bottles into filament for 3D printing, creating sustainable business models. It addresses the growing challenge of plastic waste by reducing environmental impacts, creating economic opportunities for low-income individuals, and promoting localized manufacturing to strengthen knowledge transfer on circular economy aspects. The paper presents business case scenarios that demonstrate the economic viability of selling recycled filaments and the Polyformer machine itself, thus contributing to Vietnam’s transition to a circular economy. It also highlights the importance of stakeholder integration, collaboration between local communities, industry and academia, and emphasizes knowledge transfer to enable broader societal benefits.
