Surabaya is one of the centers of industrial areas in East Java, ranked as the 4th most polluted city in Indonesia according to the Air Quality Index (AQI) 2024; on the other hand, Surabaya City has great mangrove forest potential, particularly in the Wonorejo Mangrove Center located in Rungkut District. Due to its strategic position at the edge of the city and coastal areas, this mangrove forest holds promise as a natural solution to mitigate air pollution. Environmental pressures from industrial activities, population growth, and pond creation around the mangrove forests to the preservation of mangrove sustainability. The plants’ assessment of the species diversity of mangroves and the evaluation of the tolerance levels of the plants were done using the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI). The research was conducted from September 2023 to June 2024 in the Wonorejo Mangrove Center, Rungkut District, Surabaya City. The APTI assessment involved four biochemical parameters: relative water content, total chlorophyll content, ascorbic acid content, and leaf extract pH. The results showed that the APTI values of mangrove plants ranged from very tolerant to intermediate, with Rhizophora mucronata showing the highest value (107.24 ± 0.15) and Anredera cordifolia the lowest (18.53 ± 0.45). The results indicate that all mangrove species possess the potential as bioreactors for air pollution in Surabaya City.
