Achieving Net-Zero, Protecting the Oceans, and Embracing Circular Economy: The Urgency of Addressing Climate Change
摘要
Over the past decades, global warming and climate change have been urgent issues that require serious attention. The dual challenges of achieving net zero emissions and protecting our oceans are intricately linked. Nowadays, we are witnessing strong impacts of climate change. It is crucial to understand the interconnected nature of climate change, the implications of inaction, and the steps necessary for a sustainable future. This chapter outlines different strategies for harnessing ocean energy, reaching net-zero emissions, and safeguarding coastal areas from the adverse effects of climate change. It highlights the role of the circular economy as a transformative approach to mitigating climate impacts by promoting resource efficiency, reducing waste, and fostering sustainable consumption and production patterns. The critical impacts of global warming are also highlighted, specifically the alarming trend of glacier melting, sinking islands, forest fire, wildfire, and flash floods. The glacier melting not only contributes to rising sea levels but also disrupts hydropower and freshwater supply for glacier-fed rivers. Further, it can lead to landslides and sedimentation problems, negatively affecting lake and river water quality, disrupting aquatic habitats, and increasing the vulnerability of many communities and ecosystems. These climate change driven disasters pose significant risks to both human settlements and natural ecosystems and also threatening biodiversity, leading to devastating impacts on infrastructure and livelihoods. Additionally, the chapter discusses the challenges related to the construction and adoption of renewable energy, emphasizing how circular economy practices can overcome barriers such as resource scarcity and waste generation in renewable energy technologies. Collectively, these issues underscore the urgent need for effective climate adaptation measures including nature-based solutions and comprehensive coastal management practices.
