Accessibility of Medical Information to a Broader User Group: The “Athena” Medical ChatBot

The ATHENA” (Medical Dialog System/Chatbot application is designed to provide medical information to a general public and broader user group, targeting to the assisted access to the appropriate medical information regarding queries and issues typical of a general public. These queries and issues may range from symptom checking (common and less common symptoms) to general information of physical ailments and psychological conditions. The information generated by the “ATHENA” System is intended as a preparatory step for medical appointments and (medical) care establishments and also for protection against medical gas lighting. The interface design is specially designed with the needs of people who are not as tech-savvy, such as the elderly, in mind. Additionally, the application is designed to facilitate adaptations to languages other than English, at least in the spoken dialog and interactive symptom checker components.
