Current HCI research in smart home design focuses primarily on the interaction with smart technology and pays little attention to placemaking through spatial design. Space is a direct element of home design and spatial context defines occupants’ interaction with smart objects. Hence, three elements, embedded technology, architectural elements, and the needs of the occupants, should come together for placemaking. However, the smart home design process is still scattered and loosely defined. Drawing on understandings from architecture and other related disciplines, our studies with 19 subject-matter experts, and two smart home projects, we introduced a novel design framework that integrates smart capabilities and architectural aspects/spatial design within the smart home design process. Our aim is to think beyond standalone technology to rediscover the home in smart homes.
