A Method for Selecting Characters by Moving Your Feet Back and Forth

The research involves developing a system that allows users to input text using their feet. The target users are people who have temporarily lost arm function but are expected to recover in the short term. The system needs to be ready in a short time frame because a delayed start will shorten the period of use. Also, since it will become unnecessary in a few months, it must be inexpensive. Therefore, we built a system using readily available, off-the-shelf devices. The user wears a running LED light on the top of the ankle and moves the foot back and forth with the foot on the floor. The position of the foot on the screen is measured by shooting the LED with a USB camera from the side of the foot. The range of motion of the foot is divided into 10 equal parts, and each part is considered as one state. Select one character in two steps. Japanese hiragana characters are divided into 10 groups of 5 characters each. In the first step, the groups are assigned to states. When you stop your foot in one of the states and then step on the pedal, the group assigned to that state is selected. Next, assign the characters in the group to states. Select one character using the same operation as group selection. In the experiment, the input speed was 11.7 CPM when inputting approximately 250 characters, and the error rate was 4.8%.
