An Integrated Eye-Tracker-Computer System for Operator Competency Assessment

The utilization of eye trackers in various scenarios is becoming increasingly prevalent, including operator competency assessment. By recording and analyzing the attention shifting process of operators during task execution, the operator’s visual cognitive process can be evaluated and incorporated into competency assessment. This study proposes an integrated eye tracker-computer system for competency assessment. The eye tracker is employed to record the attention shifting process, while the computer functions as the experimental interface. A desktop-type eye tracker is designed and implemented based on a binocular and dual-light source structure. The eye tracker and industrial computer are combined structurally to form an integrated device, which supports more general ability assessment scenarios. In addition, an experiment on a competency assessment application is conducted based on a improved Multi-Attribute Task Battery (MATB) platform. The effectiveness of the eye tracker in ability assessment experiments is verified by analyzing the operator’s attention shift process and the response time to the task stimulus recorded by the eye tracker in the experiment. The results reveals that this integrated system can be applied to more general ability assessment scenarios.
