In online text chats, it is difficult to grasp the sender’s emotions and intentions from a message due to the lack of nonverbal information. This feature of text chats leads to misunderstandings among conversational participants. To address this issue, we proposed a method for displaying text messages sequentially, one character at a time, similar to a typewriter. This approach mimics the speed of speech during spoken utterances, helping to convey the sender’s emotions. We aimed to clarify if such text visualization method can help receivers grasp the sender’s emotions. We tested how the receivers’ perception of the sender’s emotions changes with the speed of sequential text output in certain interaction cases in which it is difficult for the receiver to grasp the sender’s emotions. We conducted three experiments: a preliminary experiment, an in-person experiment with fewer participants, and an online experiment with more participants. The results of the in-person experiment showed that the introduction of sequential output makes it easier to imagine the sender typing the message. In addition, when the output speed is slower in a particular chat flow, the positive impression of the message becomes weaker. However, we could not confirm any significant effect of changes in the speed of sequential output on the impression of the messages in the overall experiments.
