This chapter looks at methodological quality. It departs from the understanding that there are indeed various understandings and paradigms of political science methods which often imply a reference to the well-known and probably also overused dichotomy of quantitative and qualitative methods. It seems that the fact that there are explicit understandings of methodological quality above all in the quantitative world is also part of the standardization of quantitative methods which often makes them more approachable to researchers. The chapter undertakes the attempt to assess what methodological quality specifically means for qualitative methods. It therefore briefly reviews the discussion on the qualitative and the quantitative paradigm which have been marking the methodological debate for many years. It then continues to a brief literature review on those contributions which state that such a quality assessment of qualitative methods is possible (and how this could be executed) and contrasts this with other literature which is more skeptical about such a possibility. The bottom line is that there are so many (and often contrasting) understandings of what qualitative methods actually are that it will remain difficult to define one single set of quality criteria for qualitative methods. The plea is rather for a differentiated approach.
