Development of a Game System for Enhancing Cognitive Reserve

With the aging gaming population, the potential of video games in enhancing cognitive function has garnered increasing attention. In this study, we developed an original experimental game system to examine the effects of strengthening cognitive reserve on the maintenance and improvement of cognitive function in healthy individuals at risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The proposed game serves as a research method for measuring changes in cognitive function. A dual-task feature and a logging system were implemented to, we established an environment that enables continuous recording and analysis of gameplay data. Additionally, sensing devices (e.g., heart rate monitors, EEG, facial recognition) were integrated to comprehensively measure stress and fatigue during gameplay. Additionally, we proposed a dual-task system compatible with commercial games and a software development kit (SDK) for game developers, enhancing the extensibility of game environments aimed at cognitive function improvement. The initial evaluation confirmed that various sensor data could be collected and that changes in data could be measured according to gameplay conditions. This study represents a foundational step in advancing game technologies aimed at improving the quality of life (QOL) of older adults and preventing dementia. It also provides fundamental insights for further validation and system refinement in future research.
