Exploring the Positive Effects of Audiovisual Inconsistency in Virtual Reality: An Example of a Drag-And-Drop Task

With the popularization of virtual reality technology, activities such as training, coaching and education in virtual environments are becoming more and more common. Audiovisual conditions in virtual reality have become one of the most important factors affecting user experience. However, few studies have considered the possible positive impacts in performing tasks when audiovisual inconsistencies are present in virtual reality. This study evaluated subjective user experience, test completion time, and workload differences in performing a drag-and-drop task (DND) at different distances and audiovisual conditions in a virtual reality environment. The independent variables of this study were two distance conditions (near and far) and three interaction modes (audiovisual congruent, audiovisual incongruent, and audiovisual significantly incongruent). Our study suggests that audiovisual congruence may be a better choice for close-range situations when performing repetitive work and tasks in virtual reality, as it corresponds to people's normal mode of perception of the world. However, the exact opposite effect may be observed in far distance interactions. When performing repetitive tasks at a distance, audiovisual inconsistent interactions may be a way to reduce the workload, especially in long-duration interactions, where audiovisual incongruence offers significant advantages in terms of user experience and increased productivity.
