Exploring the Interaction with Seamless Panels: A Look Into Discoverability, Navigability, and Feedback

Seamless panels represent an advancement in display and manufacturing technologies, offering a range of benefits across multiple industries. These panels, embedded into furniture, appliances and surfaces, remove the need for traditional displays or buttons, providing a more practical solution. Seamless panels are likely to conceal the visible lines and edges commonly seen in traditional design, creating an uniform and uninterrupted surface. Regardless of its many advantages, their adoption presents several challenges. This work sets out to explore distinct interaction approaches for seamless panels that could provide us with insight on how to tackle proxemics, discoverability, menu navigation and feedback. Additionally, we also aimed to gather guidelines that could inform best practices for user interface design down the line. We report the first impressions from a user study with 9 participants, suggesting the participants strongly preferred a centered menu navigation design for its focus retention, praised proxemics for enabling intuitive distance-based interactions, and valued redundant feedback mechanisms for maintaining confidence and minimizing confusion.
