The Impact of Navigation Pattern on Retrieval Efficiency and User’s Subjective Preference in Cross-Device File Management

Given the challenges of managing files on mobile interfaces, this study examined the impact of navigation bar position and menu structure on retrieval efficiency, user satisfaction, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intention to use within the context of cross-device interaction between mobile and computer interfaces. A within-subject design experiment was conducted with a total of 40 participants. There were two independent variables, namely navigation bar position and menu structure. The navigation bar position has two levels: the top navigation bar and the side navigation bar. The menu structure has two levels: the grid structure and the list. Results indicated significant effects of navigation bar position, menu structure, and the interaction effect between the two variables on retrieval efficiency and user’s subjective preference. The grid structure improved retrieval efficiency and enhanced the user’s subjective preference compared to the list structure. The side navigation bar improved retrieval efficiency and enhanced the user’s subjective preference compared to the top navigation bar. Using the side navigation bar with the list structure or the top navigation bar with the grid structure was optimal in retrieval efficiency and the user’s subjective preferences. This study discussed the influence of navigation bar position and menu structure on retrieval efficiency and user’s subjective preference. It provided practical insights for the design of navigation patterns targeted at cross-device file management.
