In tense situations, such as interviews and presentations, the mind often “goes blank.” The purpose of this study was to focus on the phenomenon of “a mind goes blank” in everyday tense situations and to clarify the requirements for the development of tools to prevent and support recovery from this phenomenon. First, to identify the factors that lead to this situation, we conducted semi-structured interviews in their 20 s and performed qualitative analysis from the perspectives of “ situation, partner, behavior, thoughts, and feelings.” The results revealed that just before experiencing “a mind goes blank,” factors such as “Be distracted by other things,” “More things to consider,” and “Information necessary for understanding is not provided” were observed. Additionally, it was suggested that “Lack of preparation,” “About the other party,” and “Perfect thought” contributed to increased tension. Next, to examine whether warming the hands is related to the prevention or recovery from “a mind goes blank,” we conducted a dual-task experiment while measuring cerebral blood flow as a physiological indicator. The results showed that when participants warmed their hands, the change in cerebral blood flow in the right frontal lobe was smaller. This suggests that warming the hands may reduce attentional focus on stress-inducing factors. From these findings, we conclude that providing support at the appropriate timing to eliminate the factors that cause “a mind goes blank” is essential. Furthermore, thermal stimulation to the hands may be related to the prevention and recovery support of this state.
