This study takes the Tainan City tourist map as an example, the official tourist maps issued by Tainan City are primarily in three forms: one presents attractions through illustrations, one through photographs, and one through text. Which of these three types of maps is the most popular among the public? This research employs a questionnaire survey method to analyze readers’ preferences for tourist maps and to understand their needs regarding these maps. The research findings indicate that users of different ages and from different residences all expressed that illustrated maps have greater appeal, and they can also enhance travel motivation and willingness to collect information. The aesthetic quality of illustrated map design, the extent to which it drives users to travel to those locations, and its ability to trigger users’ imaginations about the travel experience at those places all received high praise from users. Regarding users’ needs for the basic elements of a map, the demand for legends is the highest. The design requirements for map content include harmonious color schemes, aesthetically pleasing visual designs, and beautifully illustrated attractions. As for the functional requirements of tourist maps, the highest demand is for assistance in planning travel routes, indicating the relative locations of attractions, and providing transportation information.
