Iran has been a key supporter of militant Islamist Palestinian movements against Israeli occupation. Despite recent setbacks regarding Hezbollah, the fall of Assad in Syria, the election of Trump and the Israeli/US assault on Iran itself, Tehran is likely to continue supporting Palestinian factions and promote resistance against Israel more broadly. This is because the Israeli-Palestinian conflict forms the bedrock of the “persona” of the Islamic Republic as leader of resistance against “global arrogance.” Moreover, in the long-term Iranian leaders believe that the war in Gaza dealt severe strategic blows to Israel, such as damaging its international standing. Iran has been able to strengthen its regional relations instead. Tehran will try using growing opposition to Israel among Global South countries to find new partners and break free from US/Europe imposed isolation. To counter the short-term risk of conflict escalation with Israel and to compensate for weakened deterrence, Iran may revise key aspects of its military doctrine, including a potential shift toward weaponizing its nuclear program. There should, however, be no mistaking of Iran’s strategic intention toward the Palestinian issue. While it desires the end of the war in Gaza, Tehran does not seek the end of the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is as firmly opposed to a two-state solution as Israel’s extreme right.

摘要
