While local and European Parliament (EP) elections are characterised as ‘second order’, political parties still carefully study the results of these contests and use them to inform their strategies in advance of general elections. In 2024, the proximity of the June local and EP elections to the general election enabled parties to apply the lessons they had drawn from those contests less than six months later. Using data from the Local Election Candidate Study (LECS) 2024 and the National Election and Democracy Study (NEDS) 2024, this chapter examines the local and EP elections. It first considers the contests, outlining the campaigns and the results, before exploring the conclusions parties drew from these contests.
