This chapter characterizes the core move of the book as a new kind of argumentative intervention into the political discourse around Black reparations in the United States, indicates the flow of the argument across the five main chapters, and considers a few preliminary objections to the project as a whole. It begins with some brief background on my introduction to the issue of Black reparations and some general information on the state of public political discourse and policy around that issue in recent years. The main aim is to introduce the core challenge the book seeks to address, which I call the problem of whiteness, and to sketch the manner in which my intervention will seek to address it by scouting out a new political inroad.
