A French Foreign Language Lesson for Children with German as a Second Language in Virtual Reality: A Case Study
摘要
Students who speak German as a second language (GSL students) face a significant amount of language learning. This is particularly noticeable in early foreign language lessons in English or French. Consequently, GSL students encounter the challenge of learning another foreign language through a foreign language. In this study, a virtual learning unit (VRLU) for French communication was developed for children with German as a second language, using the textbook “dis donc!” and tested with five GSL students in a sixth-grade class. The study examined how the VRLU impacts motivation and the extent to which it offers GSL students accessible communication opportunities. The results indicated that the VRLU specifically designed for GSL students positively influenced their motivation and their ability to speak French confidently and clearly. Various aids used in the VRLU proved effective, with the most popular among GSL learners being explanations in their first language (L1), modeled repetitions, and superimposed dialog boxes. The study's data highlights the significant potential of VRLU for tailored foreign language acquisition for GSL students.
