The Impact of Augmented Reality-Based Visual Alerts on the Safety and Experience of Electric Bicycle Riders

This study investigates the effectiveness of different visual warning combinations in enhancing road safety for electric bicycle riders interacting with autonomous vehicles (AVs). Focusing on high-risk scenarios, particularly the open-door scenario, the research examines the impact of various visual prompts (text, icon, border, and their combinations) on perceived usefulness, safety, and reaction times. Using virtual cycling experiments with VR displays, we evaluate how these visual systems influence riders’ awareness and decision-making. Results from 20 participants reveal that the ‘text + icon’ combination was the most preferred, with riders finding it intuitive and clear. However, some participants noted that adding a border could increase attention but may also cause distraction or anxiety. This paper contributes to the design of human-centered AR-based communication systems that improve safety and user experience for vulnerable road users, offering insights into effective warning strategies for enhancing interaction between electric bicycle riders and AVs.
