Air pollution has created major health threats to humans causing diverse health impacts which range from irritations to severe chronic diseases. With higher level of environmental health literacy, people can understand such health risks and take precautions to avoid air pollution exposure. However, these levels of literacy are varied among people from different cultures. To understand differences in technological needs and environmental health awareness among diverse populations, we conducted participatory designs and focus groups with Thai and US nationals living in the United States. We found that the design of health technologies should be tailored to fit the level of environmental health literacy. Our results indicate that participants with minimal literacy preferred technologies that provide clear activity recommendations they can perform when air pollution is in dangerous level. We contribute to greater understanding of persuasive designs, generating design recommendations for persuasive technology.
