Population aging is an ongoing social trend in China, and it is becoming important to develop smart home voice systems, due to the growing technology acceptance of older adults. This paper aims to investigate the needs of users of smart voice assistants developed for older adults in China based on a user-centered design paradigm, and to propose an age-appropriate design for a smart voice product. The study describes an initial prototype of a smart home voice system called eVoicer, which uses Android Studio, through a literature review and interviews with five older adults in regard to their user needs. We invited 16 older users to conduct the evaluation test, carried out experiments on seven tasks, and measured the task error rates. After completing the tasks, users assessed the usefulness, trustworthiness, ease of use, social presence, and intention to use the application through a questionnaire. The results showed that a realistic female was preferred by the older participants for the image of the voice assistant. The users’ overall attitude toward eVoicer was generally positive, and entertainment was mentioned as the most important motivation to use the app. We propose the following suggestions for the design and development of age-friendly smart voice products:(i) use an image of a realistic female for the product image; and (ii) assign priority to the social and entertainment needs of older adults.
