This research investigated human-AI interaction with ChatGPT in a cross-cultural context, focusing on Chinese and German users. Users’ interface preferences, usage patterns, and engagement with ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus were examined through questionnaires. Valid respondents included 125 Chinese and 128 Germans. The findings revealed significant cultural differences in user interface perceptions: German users found the interface easier to navigate and prefer the text size and font, while Chinese users rated the ease of finding features higher. Regarding usage patterns, Chinese users prioritized professional, academic, and technical tasks more than Germans. For ChatGPT Plus, Chinese users were more satisfied with specific features like file generation and content creation, while Germans rated the overall experience more positively. Additionally, Chinese users expressed greater confidence in sharing private data with ChatGPT compared to their German counterparts. These results highlighted the need for culturally tailored AI interfaces and suggested that understanding cultural contexts can enhance user experience, adoption, and satisfaction. The study provided valuable insights for improving human-AI interaction in diverse cultural settings.
