From Skeuomorphic Design to Flat Design. Applying Eye-Tracking to Explore Cross-Cultural Differences in Visual Perception and Arousal Potential on Smart Home Control Panel User Interface Design

The rapid development of modern technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed traditional household appliances into interconnected smart home ecosystems. In user interface design, skeuomorphic design mimics real-world objects to create intuitive and accessible experiences, particularly for first-time users, while flat design emphasizes simplicity, functionality, and consistency, which makes it widely adopted in modern smart home devices. However, while both approaches enhance functional usability, their emotional impacts, such as effects on visual perception and arousal potential—remain underexplored, particularly across different cultural contexts. This study investigates the applications of skeuomorphic and flat designs in smart home control interfaces, focusing on their cognitive and emotional effects. The first phase conducts secondary data analysis to examine Eastern and Western market trends and design practices. The second phase uses screen eye-tracking technology to analyze the visual perceptions and aesthetic preferences of users from different cultural backgrounds. Findings from both phases will provide actionable guidance for designers and developers to balance usability, cultural preferences, and emotional engagement. By bridging functional and emotional aspects of interface design, this research aims to foster human-centered and emotionally resonant smart home experiences, enhancing user satisfaction, strengthening family connections, and promoting culturally adaptive designs.
