Exploring Quizzes in Programming Learning as a Student Self-help Tool

Learning to program is a demanding task full of challenges. Students encounter various obstacles at different stages of the process, and traditional teaching and learning methods have proved ineffective, resulting in high failure rates. Motivating students is one of the biggest challenges teachers face. A student’s level of involvement in a task depends on both their confidence in success and the value they attach to the activity in question. It is therefore essential to identify the causes of students’ lack of motivation. This article looks at quizzing in the classroom as a tool for engaging students. They are useful in providing a dynamic and interactive way of assessing students’ knowledge, as well as engaging them in a challenging way in lessons on the topics covered. In the case under study, Socrative was the quiz chosen. To adopt this methodology and according to their needs and objectives, the teacher prepares a set of different types of questions for each topic taught. At the end of each lesson (5 min before the end), all the students are invited to answer these same questions with immediate feedback and a result that can be numerical or qualitative. The aim is to assess how the use of quizzes can help increase student engagement and improve their understanding of the topics covered. This study aims to contribute to reflection on new methodologies for teaching programming and the application of digital technologies, such as quizzes, to increase student motivation.
