Understanding and Mitigating the Impact of System Failures on Human-Machine Team Performance

Human-Machine Teams (HMTs) are becoming increasingly prevalent in sectors such as defense, security, transport and healthcare due to their potential to enhance efficiency. However, there is little research that addresses how teams respond to and recover from system failures, particularly the impact of system failures on the interpersonal dynamics of the humans in the loop, where factors such as team cohesion, workload, and trust in automation, combine to determine HMT effectiveness. This scoping review aims to identify the key factors that relate to effective performance in HMTs that may be impacted when systems fail and how these factors may interact to affect the humans in the loop. The findings are framed as actionable guidelines for system designers and user experience (UX) researchers to mitigate the impact of system disruptions on HMTs.
