This chapter examines the tensions that emerged between civil and ecclesiastical authorities over the enforcement of the right of patronage during the government of Manuel de León (1615–1677, r.1669–1677). In the first section, I analyze the disputes between the Governor-General and various ecclesiastical sectors, particularly with chapter members during the Vacant See (1668–1672) and with Archbishop Juan López Galván, OP (1672–1674). The next section addresses the controversy surrounding the appointment of royal chaplains and the exercise of military ecclesiastical jurisdiction under the royal patronage. Finally, I examine the consequences of Treasurer Herrera’s trial during the administration of the archdiocese in the subsequent Vacant See (1673–1677).
