The Rise of the hijos de la tierra
摘要
This chapter highlights the growing influence of Manila’s beneméritos and hijos de la tierra during the first term of Miguel de Poblete’s tenure as the eighth Archbishop of Manila (1653–1663). It underscores the crucial role of personal networks—friendship, patronage, and kinship—in shaping Poblete’s political circle, particularly through the allocation of chaplaincies, curacies, and prebends to promote the diocesan clergy in the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
