As a continuation of the first book, Chaplains to the King in the Colonial Philippines: Archbishops of Manila and Unstable Authority, 1595–1653, this second volume examines the gradual reinvigoration of the diocesan church in relation to royal authority and the religious orders in the second half of the seventeenth-century Philippines (1653–1697). This period provides a valuable perspective for examining several charismatic archbishops, such as Miguel de Poblete y Casasola (Puebla, 1649–Manila, 1667), who made locality the central principle of his governance, and Felipe Pardo, OP (Valladolid, 1677–Manila, 1689), who asserted supreme authority over the Archdiocese of Manila.
