Rehabilitation Impact Through Serious Games on Reducing Shoulder Kinesiophobia: A Case Study

This study aimed to investigate the effects of rehabilitation using serious games on reducing kinesiophobia in a volunteer with a history of dislocation in the right shoulder. A single-case experimental study was conducted at the Assistive Technology Center (NTA) of the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). The volunteer, diagnosed with dislocation in the right shoulder and kinesiophobia, underwent an intervention protocol based on serious games. Before and after the protocol implementation, physical and psychological evaluations were performed, including measurements of range of motion, assessment of kinesiophobia, and associated pain. After the intervention with serious games, a significant improvement in shoulder range of motion was observed, with noticeable gains in flexion, adduction, abduction, internal and external rotation. Additionally, there was a significant reduction in scores on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, ADAP Shoulder Scale, SPADI-Brazil Scale, and Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia, indicating a decrease in movement-associated fear and an improvement in shoulder functionality. The results of this study are consistent with previous research highlighting the effectiveness of technological approaches in shoulder rehabilitation. The use of serious games as part of the intervention protocol has shown promise in reducing kinesiophobia and improving range of motion in patients with a history of shoulder dislocation. This study provides encouraging evidence of the potential of serious games as an innovative therapeutic approach in shoulder rehabilitation. However, further research with larger samples is needed to fully validate these results and generalize them to a broader population.
