In this chapter we are interested in the mapping properties of holomorphic functions, both local and global. We first prove the mean value property of holomorphic functions using Cauchy’s integral formula. The mean value property implies the maximum modulus principle. In Section 4.2 we introduce the notion of winding number and prove the argument principle. The argument principle has many applications, including Rouché’s theorem and the open mapping theorem.
