Cystic echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease or hydatidosis, is a worldwide zoonosis, caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. It usually affects adults, with frequency of osseous involvement in hydatid disease of 0.5–4%. Bone cystic echinococcosis is usually suspected from clinical and radiographical features. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are the best imaging tools for diagnostic confirmation, assessment of local extension, and postoperative follow-up. Results of surgical treatment of bone cystic echinococcosis are not gratifying. An apparent radical removal does not necessarily ensure the absence of recurrence of the illness. Medical treatment may be an adjunct to surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence.
