There is growing interest in research relating to taking a trauma-informed approach to working with those who have committed sexual offences. Research (Levenson et al., 2017) has shown that those who have committed sexual offences have experienced disproportionate trauma in their past and by keeping this in mind the interventions aimed at helping rehabilitate and reintegrate them into society would be improved. Early adversity can impact on the development of distorted thinking and maladaptive coping mechanisms (including violence). It has been shown to disrupt attachment and bonding, and this can continue into adulthood. Those who have offended are found to have much higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) than the general population, and such events change the neurochemistry of the brain, leading to poorer functioning in adulthood. This chapter will consider what approaches have been taken in a prison-based therapeutic community and in mental health services in hospitals to help develop a trauma-informed workforce.

摘要
