In the past, our history was mainly concerned with the core of society. Humankind did not preserve information about the periphery, and so historians didn’t have access to the history of the periphery. In the 21st century, this is no longer true. Historians of the 21st century will have access to the materials written by the periphery. In fact, we now have an excess of information to the point that historians cannot read all the texts written by the periphery, and have to turn to machines for help.

摘要

In the past, our history was mainly concerned with the core of society. Humankind did not preserve information about the periphery, and so historians didn’t have access to the history of the periphery. In the 21st century, this is no longer true. Historians of the 21st century will have access to the materials written by the periphery. In fact, we now have an excess of information to the point that historians cannot read all the texts written by the periphery, and have to turn to machines for help.
