Effective communication relies on a shared understanding of terms and definitions. This chapter will cover terms commonly used in communication about shoulder fractures. Orthopedic lingo is often composed of vague or poorly defined concepts describing the injury and guiding treatment. These concepts are influenced by their cultural context and are constantly evolving. To enable consistent decision-making, it is essential to recognize the similarities and differences between the concepts we use. Clearly defined terms are critical if they are to be used to support indications for surgery. Technical terms are subject to personal interpretation, and their use for fracture morphology and properties may create a false sense of precision and knowledge. Vague concepts can complicate research by introducing ambiguous descriptive terms that challenge data interpretation and synthesis. In this chapter, I will qualitatively address some poorly defined terms used in shoulder fracture communication and propose a set of terms and definitions. While readers may agree or disagree with my definitions, it is essential to explicitly define central concepts in clinical and scientific contexts.
