Feasibility Study of the Application of Aluminium as an Inductor of a Solenoid Valve

Copper has been and continues to be the preferred and commonly used conductive material for solenoid coil windings. However, the constantly rising and unstable cost of copper has attracted interest in the search for other alternative conductive materials. One of these options is aluminium, given its significantly lower price which makes its inferior electrical and mechanical properties becoming less important. Therefore, the present work was developed to study the possibility of incorporating an aluminium solenoid coil into a hydraulic solenoid valve destined for the automotive sector. With this aim, some aluminium coils were designed and manufactured, reporting the considerations that were taken into account given the implications of adopting aluminium instead of copper. The prototype aluminium coils conceived were then functionally tested in a solenoid valve, to evaluate their impact on the valve’s performance. Some of the experimental tests that were carried out consisted of measuring the magnetic force and oil flow that the valve is able to deliver with each aluminium coil designed, evaluating then the impact on the electromagnetic and hydraulic performance of the valve. Finally, in an attempt to estimate how much cost reduction aluminium can allow, the final cost of the solenoid valve, selected for this study, integrated with each aluminium coil designed was also analysed.
