Socioeconomic Determinants of the Length of Stay by Air Arrivals in Yucatan, Mexico

The estimation of tourism demand is fundamental to the conduct of impactful, efficient, and sustainable investment in the destination site. Tourism in Mexico represents approximately 7% of total GDP, while for the state of Yucatan, it represents close to 2% of its state GDP. This activity positively impacts the economic flow and employment of the population. The study analyzes from a microeconomic approach the demand of air travelers arriving in Merida, Yucatan. With a quantitative approach, non-experimental design, and a sample of 784 people, the factors that determine the length of stay in the city of Merida were determined through a Poisson model with the estimations the use from the Generalized Linear Model. The statistically significant results indicate that age and the pure tourist motive have a positive effect in the length of stay, while education and the perception of airport infrastructure have a negative effect. The average length of stay in Yucatan is 4 nights.
