As the largest group of international students, Chinese students play an important role in the UK higher education system. However, little attention has been paid to the difficulties this group encounters in intercultural communication. Both academically and socially, Chinese students are perceived as reticent. Social media has been shown to be an avenue that can be used as social support, but there are some barriers to this approach for Chinese students. For this reason, we explored the possibility of using social media to help build social support in unfamiliar environments and attempted to design an initial prototype social media platform, GlobalUP, to improve cross-cultural communication.

摘要

As the largest group of international students, Chinese students play an important role in the UK higher education system. However, little attention has been paid to the difficulties this group encounters in intercultural communication. Both academically and socially, Chinese students are perceived as reticent. Social media has been shown to be an avenue that can be used as social support, but there are some barriers to this approach for Chinese students. For this reason, we explored the possibility of using social media to help build social support in unfamiliar environments and attempted to design an initial prototype social media platform, GlobalUP, to improve cross-cultural communication.
