Mental health problems are a global social issue. Prior research has shown that young people, in particular, have low self-esteem and self-affirmation, and many support proposals have incorporated Information and Communication Technology. However, most of those proposals focus on self-care. On the other hand, in the field of psychology, recall of “episodes” (memories of personal experiences) is one factor that can increase self-esteem. It has also been shown that being praised for one’s strengths by others can lead to learning new aspects of oneself. In this study, we propose a framework that allows users to exchange messages with others that focus on the partner’s strengths and episodes related to those strengths. We conducted an experiment to consider two unresolved topics related to realizing the proposed framework, the specific functions required for the framework and the impact of the episodes given by others on self-esteem and mood. As a result of the experiment, we found that the task of praising each other had a positive effect on self-esteem and mood. However, no significant effect was confirmed on the effects of messages containing episodes. We found that being praised from multiple perspectives in the content of the message had a positive effect on self-esteem and mood. These results provide insights into designing a new system to support self-esteem based on praise exchange.

摘要
