Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Student Perceptions of the Adoption and Integration in Ghana, West Africa
摘要
This study investigates the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education institutions (HEIs) within emerging contexts, using a technology-focused university in Ghana as a case study. In an era of rapid AI advancements, HEIs face unique challenges and opportunities in adopting these technologies to enhance educational outcomes. The research focuses on students' perceptions, preparedness, and support for AI implementation, revealing a generally positive outlook toward increased AI adoption in academic settings. A mixed-methods case study approach was employed, combining survey responses from 200 participants to explore key determinants influencing AI adoption. The study addresses three core questions: (i) To what extent is AI currently integrated into higher education curricula in Ghana? (ii) What factors facilitate or hinder AI adoption in these institutions? (iii) How does AI impact teaching strategies, student engagement, and learning outcomes? Findings indicate that while students are receptive to AI integration, successful implementation requires careful consideration of cultural sensitivity, accessibility, inclusivity, ethical implications, and sustainability. The study provides insights into strategies for equitable AI adoption, ensuring that the benefits of emerging technologies are accessible across Ghanaian HEIs, ultimately contributing to more innovative, inclusive, and effective educational practices.
